Why Your Washer Won’t Fill with Water

Washer Won’t Fill?

A Troubleshooting Guide

A washing machine that won’t fill with water can be a frustrating problem, but it’s usually a simple fix. Here are a few things you can check to try to troubleshoot the problem.

Make sure the water is turned on. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget to turn on the water when you’re doing laundry. Check the water valve to make sure it’s turned on, and then check the water supply lines to make sure they’re not kinked or blocked.

Check the fill hoses. The fill hoses are the hoses that connect the water supply lines to the washing machine. If they’re kinked or blocked, the washer won’t be able to fill with water. Check the hoses for kinks or blockages, and then repair or replace them as needed.

Check the water inlet screens. The water inlet screens are located at the back of the washing machine. They filter out any debris that could clog the water supply lines. If the screens are clogged, the washer won’t be able to fill with water. Clean the screens with a brush or vacuum cleaner.

Check the water level switch. The water level switch is a sensor that tells the washing machine when to stop filling with water. If the switch is faulty, the washer won’t fill with water. Check the water level switch with a multi-meter, and then replace it if it’s faulty. A bad water pressure switch can also cause your washer to overfill with water, potentially flooding your laundry room.

Check the water inlet valve. Using an inexpensive voltage tester pen ($5-10) you can hold the pen near the water valve when the valve should be letting water in, if the pen is blinking or beeping indicating power is being supplied to the solenoid, then the valve is faulty and should be replaced. For the relatively low price of a voltage tester pen, they’re well worth the money as they can come in handy for a lot of different scenarios.

If you’ve checked all of the above and still you find the washer won’t fill with water, it’s time to call a professional. A professional appliance repair technician will be able to diagnose the problem and fix it quickly and efficiently.
