1. Check the drain hose: If you’ve got a dishwasher not draining, start by checking the drain hose for any clogs or kinks. Make sure the hose is properly connected to the garbage disposal or sink drain, and that there are no obstructions preventing water from flowing out of the dishwasher.
2. Run the garbage disposal: If your dishwasher drain hose is connected to the garbage disposal, running the disposal may be all it takes to get things moving again. Sometimes, unground food or food sludge in the disposal can prevent the dishwasher from draining properly. Let the garbage disposal run for 15 seconds after the food is gone to clear any remaining debris in the P-trap drain beneath the disposal. Use a plastic cup to scoop the dirty water into a bucket for disposal, and then use towels to soak up the last bit of water in the bottom of the machine. If you’ve got a shop vac, that’ll save you some elbow grease.
4. Clean the air gap: Occasionally, an air gap can become clogged with debris, preventing the dishwasher from draining correctly and leaving standing water in the dishwasher. If your dishwasher has an air gap, twist it counterclockwise to remove it and check for gunk inside. Clean the air gap with water and a stiff brush, replace it, and run the dishwasher cycle again.
5. De-gunk the drain basket: The drain basket at the base of your dishwasher can also be a source of clogs and odors. Remove the cover and check for food buildup in the basket beneath. Use your hand or a spoon to remove any debris, replace the cover, and run the wash cycle again.
